Preserving the History and Legacy of Public Education in Vancouver

Beginning in 2004, a group of retired teachers and administrators began volunteering their time to preserve the history and legacy of the Vancouver School District.

Initially, the goal was to establish a Heritage Centre that would be open to the public. Visitors would be able to view historical photos, documents, and artifacts on the history and accomplishments of the public education system in Vancouver.

The creation of such a centre remains an ambition. However, for the past several years, efforts have focused on creating a digital Archive drawn from photos and documents collected by the Vancouver School Board and stored at the VSB Education Centre.

More recently, priority has been given to:

  • designing and building a Heritage website
  • drafting a Heritage policy for the Vancouver School District
  • supporting schools in their efforts to build their own archives/heritage centres.
