Iona Whishaw Named Outstanding Principal in Canada

David Thompson Secondary Principal Iona Whishaw was named one of Canada’s top principals by the National Academy of Canada’s Outstanding Principals. The award recognizes principals from across the country who share professionally, interact collegially and act as mentors to new colleagues.

David Thompson Secondary Club Hunger Bites Helps DTES

 

It all started last fall. John Fister, a law teacher at David Thompson and a small group of his students decided to practice what they preached when it came to social justice and the value of community engagement. In early December, after raising hundreds of dollars, purchasing and preparing food, the students headed down to the DTES on their weekend.

Student Forum to Examine Personalized Learning from the Student Perspective

On Jan. 31st, 2012, over 230 secondary students from across the entire Vancouver School District will come together at the Roundhouse House Community to discuss how they learn best and what current learning opportunities are available in the Vancouver school system.

Sexsmith Elementary Visited by 30 Foot Dragon

This Wednesday Sexsmith Elementary opened its doors to the school community to invite them to celebrate Lunar New Year. The elementary school gym came alive with a dozen and a half student dragon dance. Students also visited ten stations manned by parent volunteers.

Demand for Yaletown School Keeps VSB Facilities Busy

In recent years a growing number of Yaletown residents seem to be sticking around longer in the downtown core, even after having children. At least that’s what the demographics are telling the VSB facilities staff. This trend has gradually increased pressure on the neighbourhood’s schools.

Results from 2011 Elementary Field Day

It was a big day for elementary students across the district and now the results are in. This year 68 schools participated in the 2011 District Elementary Cross Country Championships.

Ann Hayes - Kitsilano Secondary Teacher, Runner, Kona Ironwoman

The winds of Kona Island was blowing so hard, it was knocking riders right off their bikes. Kitsilano Secondary teacher Ann Hayes kept her head down and continued to pump hard. She was in the second leg of the Kona Iron Man, the ultimate Ironman challenge that brings together 1800 of the top triathlon athletes from around the world.

Students from False Creek Elementary got a chance to have a sneak peek of the Grey Cup as part of a BC Sports Hall of Fame sports presentation this week at Creekside Community Centre.

Students hit the Trails at Trout Lake for VSB Elementary Field Day

A total of 2312 elementary school athletes participated in this year's Field Day at Trout Lake. Despite fear of rain, the sunshine broke through as the young runners hit the trails.

Streetfront Program Transforms Students into Marathon Runners

Hidden away in a pair of joined portables on the cusp of Britannia Secondary's property is one of the Vancouver School Board's most dynamic and inspiring programs.The Streetfront program is an active alternative program that puts a strong physical aspect to the curriculum; running three times a week, regular gym sessions, swimming and weight training, along with hiking, camping, canoeing, and Nordic skiing. In addition, Streetfront instructors teach their students how to run marathons.

"Each One, Teach One" a Terrific Partnership between Windermere and St. George's School

Public/Private Partnerships aren’t new in many parts of the public sector. But in education, they tend to be incredibly rare. That’s why Brian Lee, the Director of Student Services at St. George’s School and Tamara Maxim, a teacher in Windermere’s Life Skills class, are particularly excited about a very special program they’ve developed together. This program connects St. George’s students with developmentally challenged students from Windermere’s Life Skills program.

Lord Byng Project 3B Immigrant Drama Night Audition is a Big Success

This December wasn’t just a time for presents, it was also an exciting time for auditions. This winter, 65 enthusiastic and creative immigrant students from Lord Byng, Britannia, Kitsilano, Point Grey, Prince of Wales, University Hill and Magee and friends from Adult Education Center, Capilano and Langara College strutted their “acting stuff” in two drama auditions held at Lord Byng Secondary School and at Kerrisdale Community Center.

New Kitchener Elementary on Track for Fall 2012 Opening

Drive by Kitchener Elementary and you’ll get an opportunity to see the building of a brand new replacement school. The new building will be a hybrid combination of old and new with the retention of the 1914 heritage school building relocated to the corner of King Edward & Collingwood.

VSB Offers Big Discounts for Facility Rentals

The community already makes extensive use of Vancouver School Board space every year, with over 4,000 rental contracts per year for fields, gymnasiums, auditoriums, classrooms and other kinds of spaces in our 109 schools. Now a new pilot program is being implemented with an aim to make Board rentals even more accessible to the community.

Media Release: Vancouver Report Cards will be Sent Home via Students, Not Mail
The Vancouver School Board is committed to ensuring that costs are kept to a minimum following the Ministry of Education’s direction to all school districts earlier this month requiring them to generate and distribute report cards even though they will be without marks during the current teachers’ job action.

VSB Releases Comprehensive Assessment of all Schools with Significant Seismic Risk
Last night the Planning and Facilities Committee of the Vancouver Board of Education received a preliminary draft report from Coriolos Consulting outlining the current seismic risks facing many of the district’s oldest schools. The assessment detailed three options for each school and provided preliminary estimated costs required to seismically upgrade, renovate and/or replace 48 aging schools.

3B SWIS Program to Host Year of the Dragon Culture Festival

According to Chinese traditions, the New Year has been one the most important festivals in Chinese culture for the past 5,000 years. This year, for the third time running, the VSB SWIS Program’s Byng Inclusion Project 3B will help celebrate with their Year of the Dragon Cultural Fest at Kerrisdale Community Centre.

Winter Weather and Your Schools

Parents should be aware that when snow is expected overnight the VSB monitors the weather and road conditions carefully and has a thorough system in place to do an evaluation of transportation routes well before schools open in the morning.  There is also a well-established communications system in the district and between surrounding school districts.
