Parents and administrators at Tillicum Community Annex Elementary School are challenging community members to ride to the top of Mount Seymour to help raise funds to build a new playground and community gathering space at their small inner city school.

This month, CLICK (Contributing to Lives of Inner City Kids) and the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) launched Vancouver’s 8th Annual Inner City Kids Week. The week went from May 14 – 18, 2012 and was designed to raise awareness and funding for a wide range of programs supporting children who live in poverty in the city.

The Vancouver School Board has just launched a car-sharing program at the Education Centre as an initiative to promote sustainable transportation in the school district. Senior Management staff and Board Trustees were present at the launch on May 24 to show support for this sustainability initiative.

On the morning of Wednesday, May 16 at 8 AM over 100 students arrived by bike at L’Ecole Bilingue for a Biker’s Breakfast aimed at celebrating Bike to School Week. The event featured bike decorating, a bicycle-powered smoothie machine, a nutrioutious breakfast for the bikers and some prize giveaways.

Students from David Livingstone Elementary got a crash course in Titanic history this month. The whole school was transformed (including the school gym, which was decked out completely) for the theme day as students and staff dressed their parts. Some Livingstone students were dressed to the nines as "first class passengers" while others wore more simple outfits of "third class passengers".

After a year of planning and eight months of fundraising, Lord Byng Secondary School is pleased to announce that students raised over $28,000 towards the building of a boy's dormitory for the Mully Children’s Family (MCF), an orphanage in Ndalani, Kenya.

Over 50 Students and staff from 12 secondary schools across Vancouver attended a Sustainability Workshop on April 13 at the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS), at the University of British Columbia. The students learned from UBC researchers about cutting-edge technologies and research and to see real-life applications of sustainability in action.

Two Vancouver School District students have been recognized on a national level through their community initiatives, pursuit of engagement and level of involvement. Each student will receive up to $70,000 from the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership awards program.

This year Beaconsfield Elementary hosted the Evening of the Bands, a collaborative music concert featuring talent from over half a dozen schools and instructors from Capilano University. The evening featured special lessons from music tutors and band practice with students from all schools.

During the UBC Reading Week in late February, Queen Alexandra and Mt Pleasant Elementary weren't the only schools to benefit from UBC volunteers. 27 first and second year UBC science students also visited David Lloyd George to work with 220 students in the primary classes and one Grade 4 class. DLG students rotated through 10 science stations in the 3 days and participated in various hands-on Science activities led by the UBC students.

A recent ruling by the Labour Relations Board (LRB) allows teachers to withdraw services for up to three days in the first week of the strike, provided that they give two school days’ notice before striking. Since that ruling, the BC Teachers‘ Federation (BCTF) has given notice that it intends to strike for three days starting on Monday next week.

Over the past two months, over 1500 students from 11 schools (from as far away as New York) have collaborated to create a new choreographed video for Pink Day 2012. The video features students from Vancouver, Burnaby, Roberts Creek, West Vancouver and Richmond dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”. Producers say it is designed to celebrate diversity and promote acceptance in school districts.

This February was a busy time for many Vancouver schools. At Fleming Elementary, February 16 was marked by the annual Jump Rope for Heart. The event was fun times for the hundreds of students involved.
