This April, dozens of alternative education students from a variety of programs showcased their art for parents, fellow students and the public at the Roundhouse Community Centre. The exhibit was in place for most of the week.

This month, CLICK (Contributing to Lives of Inner City Kids) and the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) launched Vancouver’s 8th Annual Inner City Kids Week. The week went from May 14 – 18, 2012 and was designed to raise awareness and funding for a wide range of programs supporting children who live in poverty in the city.

Raised in Pakistan, Surayya Jan lost her mother to cancer when she was just nine years old. Two years later, she survived an awful earthquake that devastated parts of Pakistan and collapsed the apartment building her family was living in. Shortly after the quake, she moved  to Canada to live with her aunt, but continued to be haunted by the stress of the past. In her new home in Vancouver, Jan continued to struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder.

This month, if you walked into Lord Byng’s art gallery you would be astounded. The small bright white space was jammed with dozens of pieces showcasing some incredibly creative mix-medium art. It’s all part of this year’s Word Show, a multimedia assignment that challenged students to take a poem and represent it with another artistic/creative medium.

The Vancouver School Board is looking at joining forces with the federal government’s Sector Council to create a unique series of partnerships aimed at creating a wide range of enhanced programs and experiential learning opportunities that will develop skills, expand career awareness and facilitate informed decision-making for the district’s students.

David Thompson students Narae Kim, Jairah Alindogan and Yvonne Hao took top prize in the Grade 7 - 9 age group in this year's ExploraVision contest, the largest K-12 science and technology competition in the world.

Innovative research from Vancouver’s Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao, Grade 12 students at Magee Secondary, may help solve the problem of dealing with household and industrial plastic waste. Their research won them first prize in the regional Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada competition. Their work identified soil bacteria from the Fraser River estuary that can naturally break down phthalates, a fossil fuel-based additive found in some plastics.

These days the district faces big challenges and opportunities. To chart a way forward, in December of 2010, the Vancouver Board of Education decided to embark upon a district-wide analysis of our programs and facilities aimed at answering the big question: What programs and opportunities should we provide to our students now, and into the future?

Eleven years ago, a group of at-risk teens were encouraged to chart a new path for themselves, inside the classroom, in the great outdoors and within their own lives. For these 22 students, roadblocks such as addiction, abuse, criminal activity and depression were obscuring their outlooks on life. But a new program called ‘Take A Hike’ aimed to provide both purpose and positive encouragement. Today, it continues to motivate dozens of at-risk students each year.

When you refer to the ‘City of Vancouver’ you might envision a trip to the sandy beaches of the West End, traversing the seawall of Stanley Park, interpreting unique sculptures at the Vancouver Art Gallery or maybe taking in a few shows during the Vancouver Film Festival. Chances are, you probably wouldn’t think of the city as being the backdrop for a one-of-a-kind education experience.

When Gary Xia and his team of U-Hill debaters walked into St. Georges School in December of last year for their second debate tournament of the season, they were taken aback by the posh interior of the school. Everyone was served cupcakes and juice and their opponents were decked out in spiffy matching team uniforms. It was an intimidating sight.

At first glance, it’s clear that Nootka Elementary is a different kind of school. A multicolour mural of reds, yellows, greens and blues leads up to the main entrance of the school. It is an ideal reflection of the artistic expression found within its walls.

This year, General Gordon Elementary’s own “Tomato Heads” took first prize in the City Destination ImagiNation Championship. The team was composed of Grade 5 and 6 students including Sydney Young, Zaid Stuart-Khafaji, Saige MacKenzie, Mia Chapman, Savannah Sears, Micah Pavlidis and Roman Johnson. The Tomato Heads were awarded the number one spot ahead of 100 other teams from as far away as Whistler.

Tucked away in a small corner classroom of David Thompson Secondary School, an assortment of students gathers to go over their current class work, assignments and learning progression.The conversation soon shifts to a critique of The Hunger Games, prompted by a visually artistic project completed by one of the students.

Over the past three months, artist Susanne McCallum has been paying regular visits to the classrooms of Champlain Heights Elementary as the school’s Artist-in-Residence. McCallum’s program “Brush Strokes with Susan” integrates First Nations storytelling and themes into artwork. The program also teaches students about First Nations-themed life-skills like cooking bannock and baking muffins and other goodies.

What do you get when you combine singles looking to meet their match and gourmet cooking? Speed Dating Cooking Class. The course is a brand new night school class hosted by VSB Continuing Education and it kicks off April 18 for three weeks.

As the rain patters down outside Windermere Secondary, one classroom is bursting with energy as its students meticulously work to craft small “sushi” candles. Every five minutes, a small cluster of teens will burst into spontaneous song. A sort of impromptu “whistle while you work” for some of the district’s more artistically driven students.

The VSB  has been hard at work these past few weeks to kick start a chain of events that will lead to changes in our education system informed by student voice. The goal  is to develop a school system for the near future in which student opinion and input is of utmost importance.
