David Thompson Secondary Principal Iona Whishaw was named one of Canada’s top principals by the National Academy of Canada’s Outstanding Principals. The award recognizes principals from across the country who share professionally, interact collegially and act as mentors to new colleagues.

In recent years a growing number of Yaletown residents seem to be sticking around longer in the downtown core, even after having children. At least that’s what the demographics are telling the VSB facilities staff. This trend has gradually increased pressure on the neighbourhood’s schools.

Drive by Kitchener Elementary and you’ll get an opportunity to see the building of a brand new replacement school. The new building will be a hybrid combination of old and new with the retention of the 1914 heritage school building relocated to the corner of King Edward & Collingwood.

The community already makes extensive use of Vancouver School Board space every year, with over 4,000 rental contracts per year for fields, gymnasiums, auditoriums, classrooms and other kinds of spaces in our 109 schools. Now a new pilot program is being implemented with an aim to make Board rentals even more accessible to the community.

Injuries on the job have a big cost, both to the worker’s health and to an organization’s bottom line. No time are such injuries more likely to occur than in the winter or during school breaks when routine duties are altered. While winter snowfall can elicit joy among many students, for many school building engineers, a snow dump means hours of heavy and frantic shoveling. For many older engineers, this can be particularly taxing and in some cases, dangerous.

On Thursday November 10, 2011 a reception was held at the Masonic Hall to honor employees from the teaching staff, administrative staff and support staff who retired during the 2010/2011 school year. The retirees were treated to some inspiring music from the Eric Hamber Jazz Band under the direction of teacher Nick Francis and were later serenaded by the Lord Byng Concert Choir under the director Lisa Lan. The retirees enjoyed a selection of appetizers and desserts and had a chance to connect with former colleagues and friends and share stories.

The annual United Way Pancake Breakfast has been a celebrated tradition for more than a decade at the Vancouver Board of Education (VBE). This year, like years past, employees from all over the district attended the event, which signals the start of the campaign.

You are likely aware that teachers are presently involved in a labour dispute, phase one of which commenced on the first day of the current school year.  As part of this action, members of the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) in every school district in the province are choosing to not prepare report cards.  The Labour Relations Board (LRB) ruled that during the current job action, teachers need not prepare or distribute report cards; or provide any student assessment data to principals or school office staff, except for Grade 12 marks required for graduation, post-secondary applications and scholarship purposes.

The brief included five key areas of concern for the Vancouver School Board and likely for most school districts across the province.

Vancouver’s Board of Education trustees have sent a letter home to parents of Grades 4 and 7 students clarifying the process for a parent to request their child be excused from writing the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA).
