Churchill student brings home medal from Taiwan International Science Fair

Schools & Students

Winston Churchill Secondary Grade 10 student Yimeng Li has returned from the Taiwan International Science Fair with a silver medal and a $3,000 cash prize. This fair brings together Grades 9 to 12 students from 20 nations. Li was one of only two finalists selected to represent BC and Canada at the January 2018 event. She came second in the Environmental Science Category for her project “Anaerobic Respiration: A Novel Bioelectrochemical Copper Recovery System?” It aims to develop an electrochemical copper recovery system not dependent on external energy sources.

Every spring, thousands of British Columbia students will present projects for school science fairs. They develop an appreciation for scientific research as they engage in their own discoveries, prepare displays and present their work to classmates. Many of these young scientists then move on to take part in regional science fairs and beyond.
