It all started last fall. John Fister, a law teacher at David Thompson and a small group of his students decided to practice what they preached when it came to social justice and the value of community engagement. In early December, after raising hundreds of dollars, purchasing and preparing food, the students headed down to the DTES on their weekend.

This Wednesday Sexsmith Elementary opened its doors to the school community to invite them to celebrate Lunar New Year. The elementary school gym came alive with a dozen and a half student dragon dance. Students also visited ten stations manned by parent volunteers.

According to Chinese traditions, the New Year has been one the most important festivals in Chinese culture for the past 5,000 years. This year, for the third time running, the VSB SWIS Program’s Byng Inclusion Project 3B will help celebrate with their Year of the Dragon Cultural Fest at Kerrisdale Community Centre.

On January 20th, Renfrew Elementary School celebrated Lunar New Year with a special assembly, which featured a recorder song, arts and crafts and even a dragon dance.

Churchill’s drinking water situation is about to get a whole lot better. A new initiative spearheaded by a Youth4Tap, a group of 30 to 40 students from all grades, is aiming to replace the schools old and awkward water fountains with several new state-of-the-art refillable water stations.

The community already makes extensive use of Vancouver School Board space every year, with over 4,000 rental contracts per year for fields, gymnasiums, auditoriums, classrooms and other kinds of spaces in our 109 schools. Now a new pilot program is being implemented with an aim to make Board rentals even more accessible to the community.

This December wasn’t just a time for presents, it was also an exciting time for auditions. This winter, 65 enthusiastic and creative immigrant students from Lord Byng, Britannia, Kitsilano, Point Grey, Prince of Wales, University Hill and Magee and friends from Adult Education Center, Capilano and Langara College strutted their “acting stuff” in two drama auditions held at Lord Byng Secondary School and at Kerrisdale Community Center.

It’s a big task and a major part of the process is our new website called Our Future. The site has three sections: Your Schools, Your Community, and Your Voice.

This year's Fall Extravaganza was the third community event organized and iniated by the Engaging Neighbourhoods Initiative, a partnership between local secondary students (many of whom hail from David Thompson Secondary), UBC, South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, DTCST, Fraserview Boys and Girls Club, BC Housing at Orchard Park and Vancouver Middle Childhood Matters coordinator.The project is sponsored by the United Way.

Alisha Fredriksson is heading south this winter – way south. The Grade 11 Prince of Wales Mini School student is one of 60 students from around the world selected to participate on a scientific exploration trip to Antarctica.

The beginning of December marked the opening of the iconic Trek Tree Lot at Prince of Wales Secondary School. The Christmas Tree Lot is an annual fundraiser for the outdoor education program.

This fall the members of our secondary student leadership group, the Vancouver District Students’ Council (VDSC) gathered together at the Education Centre for a day of team building and planning.  The students were led by a team from Free the Children who engaged the students in activities which would help them to grow as leaders.  While some of the games were less than conventional, the results were amazing.

December 1 is a special for Windermere. It marks the school’s 50th Anniversary and school party planners say it shall be glorious. For the past few months Windermere staff have diligently prepared for the school’s special day. Come Thursday evening, teachers, students, community members and alumni will be transported back to Windermere circa 1961.

This year, Britannia Secondary students William Davis, Gerald Angus and Shaniece Angus got a lesson of a lifetime. The three teens were among 410 other Nisga’a people of all ages who undertook a two week long “Journey Home” to their traditional territories in Northern BC.
