Lord Roberts Primary Writing Gala showcases a year’s worth of imagination

Schools & Students

Lord Roberts Elementary recently celebrated the written work of its youngest students at its second annual Primary Writing Gala.

“Over the school year, students have been actively exploring their ability to express themselves through the written word,” describes resource teacher Sharon Anne Wyatt.  “Last year, eight classes participated and this year there were a total of 16 classes involved, kids from kindergarten to Grade 4.”

The Roberts’ teachers have been part of a two-year collaborative inquiry, which focused on developing ways to stimulate individual students’ interest in writing. At the gala students displayed their stories, short paragraphs, and poetry on all kinds of topics including Canada, First Nations, butterflies, science, and themselves. All of this was highlighted by lots of colourful artwork.

“It was a huge success. We had parents coming to the school until almost 7 o’clock in the evening,” reports vice principal Doug Styles.
