Tillicum Community Annex School Gears Up for Bike to School Week

Community, Green, Programs, Schools & Students

Tillicum Annex’s Grade 3 teacher and resident bike enthusiast Jaeger Hunter is leading the way for his students to get active and have fun on their way to and from school. The “Tillicum Hummingbirds” will be biking, walking, and scootering during the week of May 25-29 as part of the regional “Bike to School Week” initiative from HUB: Your Cycling Connection.

Hunter first learned of this initiative last year while teaching at Trudeau Elementary when his colleague Kim Heinrichs signed the school up. Taking part in Bike to School Week last year put Hunter on his cycling path. He says, “I was taking the bus and it was about the same amount of time as riding my bike, so I figured I may as well get the physical benefit from my commute. Plus, it’s more reliable – my bike’s never late!”

HUB makes it easy to participate. Hunter signed Tillicum up on their website, and received a package with everything he needed to lead the team, including posters and stickers for tracking the kids’ trips, and incentive prizes like bike lights and bells. The Grade 3’s have created posters to promote the initiative, and each division has their own “road” to track their bike trips. And it’s not just for students – staff can sign up for the coinciding “Bike to Work Week” and track trips for their own chance at winning great prizes.

Biking (or walking, or scootering) to school is a great way to practice sustainability, improve safety at the school (fewer cars and cleaner air), and increase healthy active living. Kudos to all the VSB schools who are participating in this year’s Bike to School Week.
