AGA: Recognition for Accomplishment

Classification:
A: Foundations and Basic Commitments
Code:
AGA

It is the practice and intent of the Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) to honour distinguished or exceptional achievements of citizens, students, staff members, or members of the Board.  This special recognition may take a variety of forms, as appropriate to the occasion and the nature of the achievement to be honoured;  for example, the Board may grant "official residency status" to groups of performing artists who particularly stimulate students' interest in the arts, or the Board may issue special commendations or conduct special presentations or ceremonies.

Recognition of School Program Highlights

It is the practice of the Board to give public recognition to the many fine programs in the Vancouver schools.  To this end, the Chairperson of the Board or Standing Committee will briefly review some of the events in these programs at the beginning of regular Board or Standing Committee meetings, when appropriate.  From time to time, participants in such programs will be invited to attend Board or Standing Committee meetings to make a brief presentation and to receive recognition by the trustees.  Due to the many issues and concerns that the Board and Standing Committees have to address, one program highlight presentation may be scheduled for any Board or Standing Committee meeting with a time allotment of up to fifteen (15) minutes for the presentation.  Either the Chairperson of the Board or Standing Committee or the liaison trustee will convey the special recognition on behalf of the Board or Standing Committee.

Exchange of Gifts with Visitors

From time to time, trustees may present appropriate gifts to special visitors.  Most often, these gifts will be publications reflecting the landscape and people of the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia, or Canada as a nation.  The selection of publications will be the responsibility of the Office of the Superintendent.

When appropriate, senior management may also present such gifts to special visitors on behalf of the Board.

Based on Board actions of 1977 January 04, 1978 September 18, 1981 March 25 and current practice.
