BHE: Board Member Insurance

B: Board Governance and Operations

Because they are members of an agency of government whose powers and duties can be exercised only by a decision of the majority of membership of the Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) when the Board is officially in session, the members of the Board and its employees act as agents of the Board.  None of these individuals should be placed in a position of personal liability for the performance of the duties entrusted to them by the voters or assigned to them by the Board.

The Ministry of Education purchases blanket liability insurance to cover all school districts, to indemnify the Board, Board members, and agents of the Board for their official actions in the service of the Vancouver schools.

Note: The liability insurance policy carried by the Ministry for the school district covers the Board as a whole, the individual trustees and senior management, and all employees of the Board while acting within the scope of their duties, including extra-curricular activities.
