GCA: Professional Staff Positions
All professional staff positions in the school district will be created initially by the Board of School Trustees (the “Board”). Although such positions may remain temporarily unfilled, only the Board may abolish a position it has created.
When a position is created, the Board will approve the broad purpose and function of the position. The associate superintendent - area, or designate, will prepare a detailed role description for the position; role descriptions, provided they stay within the broad scope of the position envisaged by the Board, do not need to be approved by the Board but can be created and altered at the discretion of the associate superintendent - area, or designate.
Once role descriptions have been established, staff members will be responsible for meeting the qualifications and performing the duties listed in their role descriptions.
Note: The role descriptions of teachers and some other professional employees are affected by the terms of the School Act and the Regulation (see citations below). The agreement between the Board and the teachers' union sets forth the definitions of various positions, including that of a continuing teacher, an on-call teacher, an area counsellor, a special class teacher, a teacher consultant, etc. The agreement should be consulted for current definitions of terms.
