GCBD: Professional Staff Leaves and Absences

The Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) provides a plan for leaves and absences of professional staff members, designed to  address their health, important family or other personal emergencies, professional development, and necessary professional and personal obligations. 

Leaves and absences will be granted in accordance with Board policies and regulations and the terms of negotiated agreements between the Board and recognized union/ associations of professional staff members. 

Every teacher has the obligation to fulfil his/her teaching contract unless the Board grants such teacher leave of absence. 

It is the policy of the Board to grant leave to members of the professional staff in accordance with the terms of agreements currently in force and, for those members of the professional staff not covered by an agreement, in accordance with the terms of their individual contracts with the Board. 

The  Associate Superintendent - Human Resources is charged with the administration and granting of all leaves of personnel for all purposes. 

Requests for particular types of leave, either short-term or long-term, that are not covered by Board policy or agreement clauses may be brought before the Associate  Superintendent - Human Resources.
