GCBE: Professional Staff Vacations and Holidays
The school calendar issued by the Ministry of Education establishes the school vacation periods and holidays for professional staff members employed on a school-year basis.
Except as holidays have been declared for the school district or vacation days have been scheduled, professional staff members employed on a year-round basis will be expected to work during the vacation periods of the school-year calendar.
Vacations
Administrative and other professional personnel employed on a year-round basis will receive vacation days during their contract year in accordance with their collective or individual agreements with the Board. The length of such vacation periods is usually based on years of service in the school district.
A written request for vacation will be submitted to the employee's supervisor for approval and then be forwarded to the Associate Superintendent - Human Resources for decision. Vacation will be allowed at any time of the year provided the employee’s absence does not handicap the operation of the school district. The Associate Superintendent - Human Resources will have the authority to make changes in employees' schedules to provide for necessary services during the summer months.
Accumulation
Personnel employed on a 12-month basis may accumulate unused vacation days from year to year; personnel employed on a 10-month basis or less may not.
