GCN-1: Evaluation of Professional Staff-Teachers
TEACHERS
Under the School Act, Section 22, and School Regulation 6(1), the Superintendent of Schools shall have general supervision and direction over the educational staff employed by the Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) and shall be responsible for the general organization, administration, and supervision of the educational programs and operations of schools in the district. At any time, he/she may report on the work of a teacher and the learning situation in the teacher's class, and shall deliver a copy of that report to the teacher. In defining the role of administrative officers (principals and vice-principals), School Regulation 5(6)(c), states that they shall evaluate teachers under their supervision and report that evaluation to the Board.
The teacher, on the other hand, is required under the School Regulation 4(1)(a), to provide teaching and other educational services required, as assigned by the Board or the Minister of Education.
The teacher evaluation system of the Board is based on these legal requirements and on the regulations contained in the School Regulations that set forth the requirements for assessing teacher performance and for preparing and submitting the evaluation reports.
The teacher evaluation system of the Board is also based on the Board's commitment to seek and retain the most suitable staff to provide quality education for students.
