IGAF-R: Physical Education - Secondary School Level

I: Instructional

In order to ensure the student’s safety and well-being, the following procedure are to be followed for physical education (PE) program modifications:

Special Requirements: Early in the school year, preferably in September, the PE department head, PE staff, and the school nurse will meet to review students who have special requirements because of known health conditions.

Single Period Excuses: The student must bring a note from his/her parent/guardian, explaining the reason for the absence, either before or after missing the block.  If the student is requesting a program modification, he/she must bring a note from the parents or physician prior to having the PE teacher modify the program.  The PE teacher will accept the absence.

Absence/Modification to One Calendar Week: The student must bring a note from his/her parent/guardian or physician.  The PE teacher will accept the absence and notify the school nurse.  The nurse will keep the note on file.

Extended Medical Absence/Modified Program: The student must bring an explanatory note from the parents for any absence, or a completed Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) modified PE request form from a physician.

The note or form is to filed with the school nurse who will provide additional information for the PE teacher, as necessary.  It is expected that the PE teacher will follow the medical orders set out by a physician.

Attendance: If there are concerns about a student’s attendance, they should be referred to the school administrative officer.
