IGBI: English as a Second Language

I: Instructional

The school district provides English as a Second Language (ESL) services to those students who do not have a communicative and/or an academic working knowledge of the English language.  District Learning Services is responsible for developing and implementing these services.  The Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) provides staff, facilities, and resources, including a variety of multilingual interpreters, to meet the needs of ESL learners in the neighbourhood schools.

Initial assessment is conducted at the Oakridge Reception and Orientation Centre, with continuing assessment being done by school staff.  ESL students have the same access as other students to school  programs and resources, counsellors’ services for timetabling and programming, as well as access to specialists and specialized programming opportunities.

District Learning Services staff will monitor the need for specific ESL programs and will facilitate the creation of such programs to meet the unique needs of some ESL learners.
