Read below for the DPAC executive job description:

The two main functions of the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council are:

a) To “bridge the gap” between the Vancouver Board of Education and parents by communicating board policy to parents on the one hand, and parents’ points of view to the board on the other, through their presence at committee meetings.

b) To plan and coordinate activities that will foster effective parental involvement in the schools.

The twelve members of the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council executive will work together to carry out these functions in a variety of ways.

DPAC meetings

District parent executive members schedule their business meetings twice monthly September through June, on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.  Meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. at the VSB Education Centre at Broadway and Fir. Throughout the year, DPAC executive members also schedule city-wide meetings (orientation, budget input and information) of Parent Advisory Council representatives as well as meetings with their liaison Parent Advisory Council chairs and school DPAC representatives. These usually take the place of one of the regular DPAC executive business meetings.

PAC responsibilities

District parent executive members cooperate to maintain contact with city PACs in order to respond to needs as they arise and to act as resource persons for PACs.  They help direct questions and actions through the appropriate channels, and coordinate district-wide activities with support from VSB administration.  They keep other district parents informed of their liaison PAC concerns through regular DPAC executive meetings, and they meet with the associate superintendents to discuss items of interest.

Committee responsibilities

The twelve district parents select five DPAC executive members to represent the parental voice on the five standing committees of the VSB.  As well, district parents select DPAC executive members to sit on principal/vice-principal shortlisting and interviewing committees.  District parents select DPAC members or other interested parents to represent the parental voice on many VSB representational advisory committees (e.g. First Nations, ESL, Special Needs, Modern Languages/French Immersion).

District parents communicate committee items of interest to particular PACs and offer assistance to Parent Advisory Councils who are making presentations to VSB committees.  They inform other DPAC executive members if and when a matter of particular interest to one of their liaison schools is to be discussed at a committee meeting.

VSB support

District staff will assist district parents in planning meetings and in communicating with schools.  A senior administrator will be available to offer advice on, and make arrangements for, such activities as communicating with parents and staff, printing of materials, and organization of workshops.

District parents are not expected to be “out of pocket” for expenses they incur in this voluntary position.  They will be reimbursed by the VSB for child-minding services, car-fare, conference fees and like expenses directly related to enabling them to carry out their jobs as District Parent Advisory Council Executive members.
