How to Apply for Teaching Positions

Teaching vacancies are posted every Tuesday from September until the end of March of every school year. Two additional posting times exist to prepare for vacancies for September; in June and August.

Only those postings in high demand teaching areas will be posted on this web-site. These high demand teaching areas include French Immersion, Special Education and Physics. Postings in all other areas are usually filled by internal candidates, and as such, will only be posted at all school locations, the VTF office as well as at the Human Resources Division at the Education Centre.

For your information, there are two types of postings at the Vancouver Board of Education. Temporary postings are those that are three months or more but are not more than one school year. Continuing positions are those which are permanent in nature.

The Vancouver Board of Education / Vancouver Teachers' Federation Collective agreement stipulates that hiring into teaching positions in the Board must be done in order of priority groups. When applying for positions, you must indicate which "priority group" you fall into.

The priority groups are as follows:

Priority Group A Administrators returning to teaching and those returning from VTF, BCTF and CTF leaves
Priority Group T Continuing contracted employees.
Priority Group D Employees on the recall list
Priority Group E Employees on temporary contract who are recommended by their Administrative Officer/Supervisor
Priority Group F Employees On-Call or outside applicants

As an outside applicant, you will be applying as a Category "F". Within this category, employees on-call will have priority for hiring over those who are outside applicants.

The Human Resources Division does not shortlist or hire for specific teaching positions. Applications must be submitted directly to the schools.  Applications for positions can be downloaded from this website or picked up wherever postings are available.

The application used to apply directly to teaching positions is different than the application form used to apply to the Employee On-Call list. A separate teaching application form must be submitted for every teaching position. All teaching positions are identified by competition numbers. It is crucial that this competition number be identified on each application form submitted. You will want to fully review the instructions on the Teacher Application Form to ensure you submit the application correctly.

Please note that we are unable to receive applications electronically or by fax.
