Kindergarten registration starts District wide between November and January 31 for children who will begin school the following September.
The Vancouver School Board is proud to offer a wide range of educational options for all different types of learners in addition to excellent neighbourhood English language schools.
Some of the other programs of choice we provide include French Immersion, Mandarin Immersion Bilingual, Aboriginal Focus, Montessori, International Baccalaureate, or Fine Arts. You can explore all of these choice programs on our website at www.vsb.bc.ca/programs.
So how do I register?
The first step for everyone is to register with your neighbourhood English catchment school - regardless of whether you plan to send your child there.
You can discover where your neighbourhood English catchment school is by going to www.vsb.bc.ca/school-locator.
If your child was born outside of Canada, you need to go to the VSB District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) and complete the initial Kindergarten registration there.
If your child was born in Canada,
download the school registration form.
Complete the form and bring the necesssary documents, along with your child, to your neigbourhood English catchment school.
NOTE: In a few cases, the English catchment school will not have space for all the catchment students. In these cases, there will be a lottery for student placement in February and you will hear back from the school. Find out more by reading our Frequently Asked Questions.
Wait! I want to apply for a choice program.
Parents must register at their neighbourhood English catchment school before applying for Choice Program(s). On January 10, you can apply for up to three choice programs through our online application process. The application period closes at the end of January.
If the Choice Program you wish to attend is very popular, there may be a lottery for student placement. By late February you should hear back whether you have a space in the school or program. You will be given a formal offer of a space in a Kindergarten choice program or an indication of where you sit on the waitlist.
If you have not heard back by late February, please contact the school Principal of your neighborhood English catchment school and they will help you find out about your child’s status.
What if I want to apply a school in another catchment area?
If you are interested in having your child attend an English school that is not your catchment school, you may want to consider our cross-boundary application process that begins February 15 and ends March 1. If you are applying outside your catchment area, it is important for you to know that your child will only be considered once all other in-catchment students have been considered.
Where can I get more information or help if I run
into any difficulties?
If you have any questions or need additional information about this process, you can check out our Frequently Asked Questions.
As always, if you have any troubles with this registration process or the new online Choice program application process, feel free to contact your neighbourhood English catchment school. They will be happy to walk you through the process.
