Kindergarten registration is between November and January for children who will begin school the following September.
The Vancouver School Board is proud to offer a wide range of educational options for all different types of learners in addition to excellent neighbourhood English language schools.
Other programs of choice we provide include French Immersion, Early Mandarin Bilingual, Aboriginal Focus, Montessori, International Baccalaureate, or Fine Arts. You can explore all of these choice programs on our website at www.vsb.bc.ca/programs.
So how do I register?
The first step for everyone is to register with your neighbourhood English catchment school - regardless of whether you plan to send your child there.
You can locate where your neighbourhood English catchment school is by going to www.vsb.bc.ca/school-locator.
If your child was born outside of Canada, or if your Grade 1– Grade 12 child was born in Canada but DOES NOT speak English as his/her home language, you need to go to the VSB District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) and complete the initial Kindergarten registration there.
If your child was born in Canada,
download the school registration form.
Complete the form and bring the necessary documents, along with your child, to your neigbourhood English catchment school.
NOTE: Some English catchment schools do not have space for all the catchment students. In these cases, there will be a draw for student placement in February and you will hear back from the school. Find out more by reading our Frequently Asked Questions.
Wait! I want to apply for a choice program.
Parents must register at their neighbourhood English catchment school before applying for Choice Program(s). Beginning January 11, 2016 you can apply to attend a choice program through our online application process. The application period closes in February 4, 2016.
A draw process is used to determine student placements. By late February you should hear back whether you have a space in the school or program. You will be given a formal offer of a space in a Kindergarten choice program or an indication of where you sit on the program waitlist.
If you have not heard back by late February, please contact the school Principal of your neighborhood English catchment school and they will help you find out about your child’s status.
What if I want to apply to a school in another catchment area?
If you are interested in having your child attend an English school that is not your catchment school, then you should apply through the cross-boundary application process. Applications will be accepted at the requested school beginning February 1, 2016. The cross-boundary application deadline is February 29, 2016. Cross-boundary applications will only be considered once all catchment students have been accommodated.
