Literacy Projects

The Vancouver School Board is committed to improving the literacy skills of all students. In order to achieve this, the Board has initiated and is supporting literacy projects in several areas. These projects combine the latest research in the field with the needs of the school and classroom to create practical, effective programs for all our children.

A majority of Vancouver schools participated in the Early and Intermediate Literacy Projects for up to nine years, with some starting as early as 1999.  During that time, the teachers involved heard about the basic elements of a strong literacy program.  In response to requests from teachers and in order to implement what current research and experience show to be effective for professional learning, we  implemented a new model, "Going Deeper," in September 2008.  This model is designed to meet the needs expressed by each school.

Depending on the number of teachers participating and what sort of things they want to learn, schools will fit into one of three strands of this new Literacy Initiative: Building Content, Working Together, or Breaking Through

 What’s Different?
  • Support is better tailored to specific school/staff needs.
  • School literacy focus is narrowed.
  • Participation can involve just a few teachers or a whole staff.
  • Teams can be a combination of primary and intermediate teachers.
  • A member of the District Literacy Team will be assigned to participating schools to act as a Literacy Guide.
