No Better Time To Teach with the Vancouver Board of Education!
Thank you for your interest in School District No. 39 (Vancouver). The Vancouver school district is a large, urban and multicultural school district providing programs to 56,000 students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.
The Vancouver Board of Education has a large Teachers On-Call list for the purpose of assigning teachers to vacancies on a day to day or short term basis (under three months). The on-call list is dynamic in that it varies in size throughout the year with many of the candidates moving into teaching positions.
Teachers who are on the on-call list have priority for hiring purposes to teaching positions which are posted. Most often, the teachers within the Vancouver school district will have worked as a Teacher On-Call (TOC) before posting into a temporary or continuing teaching position. Working as a TOC for the Vancouver Board of Education can, and often does, lead to more permanent teaching opportunities.
Important note: At this time, the Vancouver Board of Education doesn't recruit applications for the TOC list through the Make-A-Future website.
The Vancouver Board of Education will be accepting applications for the TOC list during the following periods:
- 2012 Monday, April 9 through Friday, May 4
- 2012 Monday, June 4 through Friday, July 6
- 2012 Monday, November 26 through Friday, December 21

Some Tips For Completing An Application
The Vancouver Board of Education receives many more applications than the district is able to accommodate. Consequently, not all applicants will be selected for the TOC list. Selection will be based on a number of factors including the candidate’s area of teaching, successful academic history, previous and recent teaching experience, relevant work experience, and references. Documents that will be reviewed in order to evaluate applicants include:
- Application Form
- Cover Letter
- Resume
- Faculty Associate and School Associate Student Teaching Reports from the Extended (Final) Practicum / Teacher Evaluation Reports
- Academic Transcript(s) of Marks for Undergraduate Degree and BEd
- Two VSB Reference Forms
- Letters of Reference (Optional)
It is strongly suggested that students not submit an application before completion of the extended (final) practicum.
Candidates who wish to be considered for the TOC list must have completed their BEd, and be eligible for membership with the B.C. College of Teachers. Those candidates who have completed their extended (final) practicum, but have not yet completed course work for their BEd, may submit an application – however, if selected, will not be able to begin teaching service until all course work is completed.
Human Resources staff regret that, because of the volume of applications, we are not able to accommodate requests to verify the status of applications. All applications will be acknowledged by telephone or mail within three months of receipt of all documents. Please wait for us to contact you – your cooperation and patience will be appreciated.
How Is My Application Processed?
Completed applications are carefully screened and processed as follows:
Step One - Review of Application
- An application is not reviewed by the selection committee until all documents have been received.
- To ensure that your application is reviewed as soon as possible, please ensure that all documents requested on the application form are complete and up to date.
Step Two - Reference Checks
- Two VSB reference forms are required. Professional references from Administrative Officers, Faculty Associates, and/or School Associates who have seen you teach are essential.
Step Three - Interview
- Selected applicants are contacted by telephone for an interview. Please wait for the VBE Human Resources Division to contact you.
- Applicants not selected for an interview are contacted by mail. The application is kept on file for one year from the date of application. It is not necessary to reapply for the TOC list while the application is on file.
Step Four - Sign-On
- After the interview, applicants recommended for hire are contacted by telephone, and invited to attend a "sign-on" session. This session provides a welcome and orientation, and a time for completion of documentation. Applicants are not hired until completion of the "sign-on" session.
- Applicants not recommended for hire are contacted by mail. The application is kept on file for one year from the date of application. It is not necessary to reapply for the TOC list while the application is on file.
- New hires may not begin teaching until all coursework has been completed.
