English as a Second language (ESL) Pre-Employment
Student Group:
The ESL Pre-Employment Class provides a program for those ESL students who are not making successful progress in regular academic programs. The program attempts to provide students with academic and social skills necessary for successful employment as adults.
CURRICULUM EMPHASIS:
- improve English language skills
- teach basic academic skills
- emphasize social skills
- career education
- work experience opportunities
- community awareness
The primary goal of the program is to prepare students for successful future employment through the development of the necessary academic, vocational and social skills.
STUDENT PROFILE
Students are appropriate for placement in this program when they:
- have been in an ESL program for approximately two years
- exhibit a significant lack of academic achievement compared to peers of similar linguistic backgrounds and experiences
- have at least low average intellectual potential
- are in urgent need of language development and new learning strategies
- require a more supportive setting than their previous placement and,
- would benefit from a career development focus prior to leaving secondary school to enter the work force
- some of these ESL students (or low-literate students with ESL history) may also exhibit evidence of learning disabilities
SELECTION/SCREENING
ESL Pre-Employment referrals must be submitted to the Screening Committee.

□ psychological assessment, (if available)
□ current assessment of achievement levels
□ most recent report card
□ ESL report
□ School Based Team minutes
EXIT CRITERIA
Students are reviewed on a regular basis. If a change in placement is recommended, a referral is submitted to the Screening Committee. Students leave this program when they proceed to employment, or to further training at the post-secondary level or demonstrate sufficient language development to cope with the level of instruction provided within another program.

Grades 10 to 12 (at least 15 years of age to 19)
