The Vancouver Home Learners’ Program provides choice and flexibility for children and parents to partner with the public education system in designing learning experiences that are unique to every family.

Mission Statement
The Vancouver Home Learners’ Program provides choice and flexibility for children and parents to partner with the public education system in designing learning experiences that are unique to every family.  The Vancouver Home Learners’ Program is a collaborative, inclusive community of learning and support.

Core Beliefs
Honouring different home learning approaches, the Vancouver Home Learners’ Program supports and encourages child-centered learning.  With the child at the centre, the parents, student and teacher work as equal partners in each child’s learning experience. We believe that each child  is unique and that students and families need to be supported in their learning in ways that take into account the needs and situations of each child.

Program Description
The Vancouver Home Learners’ Program is open to students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.  In a three-way collaboration between student, parents and teacher, each student develops and follows a Student Learning Plan for the year which ensures students meet the learning goals for each grade level as set forth by the Ministry of Education.

Children are encouraged to attend their optional two days of programming each week; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Grades 3 through 7, or Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Kindergarten to Grade 2. Programs vary by semester and include such things as Gardening, Medieval Times, Global Learning, Science, Conservation, Robotics, Gymnastics, Art, Language Arts, Book Making, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Quilting, Languages and Music. The emphasis is on hands-on, experiential learning and project-based learning.

Most programming is multi-aged with emphasis on experiential, hands on, self-discovery and problem-based learning. Field trips and special programming form a large portion of the programming.

The Vancouver Home Learners’ Program is not a Home Schooling program where one might register then pursue their own path. The Ministry of BC curriculum must be met for each student registered in our program. In the Home Learner’s Program,  a high degree of parent participation in the student’s learning, and collaboration with  the teacher is expected. Student attendance is encouraged on their two days/week.
