Special Education

Vancouver School Board offers a variety of programs and integrated support services for students with special needs.

Alderwood Family Development Centre is a family-centered program designed to build on the strengths of children and families.

The Autism Resource Centre (ARC) is a Secondary program to support students diagnosed with high functioning autism.

The Autism Resource programs provide a small structured setting for students with autism who demonstrate significant behavioural and/or communication difficulties.

The primary focus of the unit school program is to assess student ability academically, functionally and emotionally. Patients/students attend school five days a week for assessment, assignments, unstructured activities and social development.

The BCCH: Child Psychiatry provides a comprehensive assessment, which includes psychology, education, occupational therapy and speech/language evaluations, as well as diagnostic clarification and medication review.

The objective of the School Program is to provide academic instruction and support for patients admitted into the BCCH: Eating Disorders Treatment Program.

The program objectives are: to help patients continue with their regular school work while in the hospital, to provide normalcy and routine to their days, and to help students stay connected to their home schools.

The Social Development Class offers a small protected setting for students with severe emotional difficulties.
