Board begins Superintendent/CEO Search
The Vancouver Board of Education is in the process of recruiting its next Superintendent/CEO. This search process is being led by a search committee made up of four trustees, the secretary treasurer, the associate superintendent employee services, an executive assistant and a communicator, in partnership with Boyden, an executive search firm.
The search committee will provide oversight, guidance and direction in the selection of the new Superintendent/CEO for the Vancouver School District and its stakeholders. This committee will also interview and select candidates for final interviews and decision by the Board.
Boyden has been retained to manage the recruitment process. Their role is to develop the strategy, identify and assess candidates and support the selection process – providing advice to and representing the interests of the search committee, the Board and the District.
Recruitment of a superintendent/CEO is the responsibility of the elected Board in accordance with the School Act and Board Policy 2. A steering committee of four trustees, supported by the District’s secretary-treasurer and other senior staff, will oversee the work of the executive search firm. The decision about a successful candidate will be determined by the full Board.

The Superintendent of Schools, as the chief executive officer of the District, reports directly to the elected Board of Education and is accountable for the efficient and effective operation of the District. In this highly visible role, the Superintendent is responsible for implementing the requirements of the School Act, organizing, administering, supervising and evaluating all educational programs, as well as overseeing the business operations of the District. Working within a highly collaborative and collegial school district, the Superintendent communicates consistently with the three Host Nations, the Urban Indigenous community, fourteen stakeholder groups and the broader community.
A strategic senior educational leader with a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of an urban school district, the new Superintendent will bring a successful track record of leading in a large and diverse school district. The Superintendent will ensure that learning environments contribute to the development of skills and habits in students that prepare them to contribute to a healthy and prosperous society as well as a sustainable economy as defined in the Mandate for the Educated Citizen in the Ministry of Education's Vision for Student Success.

+ About the Superintendent
The superintendent is the chief executive officer of the District. The only employee of the Board, the superintendent reports directly to the Board and is accountable for the conduct and operation of the District. Specific areas of the superintendent’s responsibility include student learning, student well-being, fiscal responsibility, personnel management, policy/administrative procedures, Board relations, strategic planning and reporting as well as leadership practices at the District. + First Nations Engagement
Engagement and consultation is important to this process and the VSB will work with xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations to inform the specific job criteria, accomplishments, experience and background that will be used to create the candidate profile for recruitment.
xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations, sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) are also invited to meet with candidates and provide feedback and a recommendation to the Board of Education, who will make the final decision.
+ Consultation with Stakeholders
Consultation with stakeholders including leadership staff, trustees, union leaders, Chairs of the Parent Advisory Committee and Urban Indigenous peoples will take place. The VSB will seek input to inform the specific job criteria, accomplishments, experience and background that will be used to create the candidate profile for recruitment.
As the Vancouver School Board continues its search for a new superintendent/CEO, it is pleased to have the support of Jan Unwin, who will serve as interim superintendent beginning in late September.
Jan brings decades of experience as a leader in the BC public education system. She is very familiar with Vancouver having worked with the District to build capacity in performance assessments of senior staff. Jan is also currently mentoring other senior leaders from around the province as part of the BC School Superintendents Association (BCSSA) mentoring program. In addition, Jan was appointed by both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Advanced Education as the superintendent of graduation and student transition. Prior to that appointment in 2014, her career included 18-years with School District No. 42 (Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows) as elementary and secondary school principal, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent and superintendent of schools.
The Board’s recruitment process for a new, permanent superintendent continues to progress and is led by a search committee made up of four trustees, supported by District staff. They have contracted Boyden, an executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment process. The decision about a successful candidate will be determined by the full Board.
