There are more than 2,000 people working in support staffing roles throughout the Vancouver School District – from building staff who keep schools clean and maintain the upkeep and safety of facilities, to supervision aides who watch over students during recess and lunch. In recognition of their contributions to Vancouver's public education system, and joining the Teacher Recognition scholarship, the District created a new Support Staff Recognition scholarship.
Eligibility for the scholarship focused on students' demonstration of strong school involvement, a good academic record, and a strong work ethic and perseverance.
Lord Byng Secondary student Jacky Chen was one of two scholarship recipients. For the application's reflection submission, he wrote about Mrs. Chow, the school's sponsor staff member for First Responders. He says, "It is great to have so many different scholarships available for graduating Vancouver School District students. This one in particular resonated with me, and I am so grateful for everyone who guided me and supported me."
Vancouver Technical Secondary's secretary Jacqueline Lee was the focus for the submission for student Terisa Dang. "It was my pleasure to express my gratitude and appreciation to Ms. Lee, as she has always been there for me when I needed her the most," says Dang. "However, I am also thankful to the other office staff here at Vancouver Technical Secondary for always supporting me and encouraging me to always do my best. I am honoured to be the recipient of this scholarship," she adds.
The new scholarship will now be available every year in acknowledgement of the work of staff who hold a support role in schools and the positive impact they have on students.
