Board receives report of schools considered for potential closure

UPDATE (Oct. 4, 2010) - Five of 11 schools provided with pre-notification of potential closure should be advanced to public consultation for further consideration, according to the recommendations contained in the Administrative Report: Schools Considered for Potential Closure.

Vancouver Board of Education trustees received the report Monday evening during a joint meeting of Planning & Facilities and Education & Student Services Committees (Committee II and III).

The 144-page report provides detailed information and analysis of the enrolment trends, school space utilization, current school programming, facility and site information, operational issues and financial impact for each school that received pre-notification of potential consideration for closure last June.

Following this review, District Management is recommending that the following schools be advanced to public consultation for further consideration of possible closure:

  • Carleton Elementary;
  • Champlain Heights Annex;
  • Macdonald Elementary;
  • McBride Annex; and
  • Queen Alexandra Elementary.

Further, District Management is recommending that the following schools be removed from the list of potential closures:

  • Bruce Elementary;
  • Collingwood Neighbourhood School;
  • Dickens Annex;
  • Hudson Elementary;
  • Kerrisdale Annex; and
  • Seymour Elementary.

The report and its recommendations are scheduled to go to the full board Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. for a decision which schools to advance to public consultation.

The public consultation is scheduled to begin Oct. 25, 2010.
