This fall the members of our secondary student leadership group, the Vancouver District Students' Council (VDSC) gathered together at the Education Centre for a day of team building and planning. The students were led by a team from Free the Children who engaged the students in activities which would help them to grow as leaders. While some of the games were less than conventional, the results were amazing.
VDSC President, Leah Bae a student at Lord Byng Secondary, said that it was the best leadership conference she had ever been to - and she has been to a few.
By the end of the day the students decided on three projects for the year:
- The Sister School Switch - an activity which involves pairs of secondary students from Vancouver switching schools over the course of four days.
- VanCity Idol - following the success of last year's VanCity Idol, the current VDSC decided to establish a new tradition. VanCity Idol not only showcases the amazing talent in our secondary schools but raises funds for worthwhile charities that support kids. Last year's proceeds went to KidStart.
- Passport to Play - VDSC is committed to reviving Passport to Pla,y a special sports day for students in our secondary schools who have a disability. Passport to Play was a very successful event which took place in 2009 and 2010. This year's VDSC plans to revive this fun packed day and work towards building partnerships between students without a disability and students with a disability.
In addition, the Vancouver District Students Council is sponsoring the "CANley Cup" - our annual canned food drive competition. The secondary school that gathers the most cans will win the coveted "CANley Cup" (the cup is being designed in a secret location by VSB elves!)
