This summer the Magee Chamber Choir showed just how high-level the school's music program is when they won in their category at the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival , then went on to win first place at the Provincial level at Performing Arts BC and then finished second in the country at the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF) .
The FCMF is recognized as one of the premier musical festivals in the country. It is affiliated with 216 cross-Canada festivals and has received over 116,286 music entries since it was first founded in 1949.
For Greg Quan, a music teacher at Magee and the Artistic Director of the Chamber Choir, the second place finish in Nova Scotia was just the icing on the cake. He says it's symbolic of the impressive musical program at Magee, which has developed a strong reputation in the musical education community.
"I believe that it shows that we are on the right track at Magee in terms of creating a high quality music program and we will continue to work at it every day and cherish every moment," says Quan. "We are very dedicated to our craft and to sharing it with others. It is the strength of our choir family, our love of singing and more importantly our love of being together that really makes the difference. As a teacher, there are very few things that could be better."
The Chamber Choir rehearses three times a week at lunch for 35-40min plus a weekly hour-long practice session run by the student section leaders.
Quan says that while he's happy for his students for their high placing in the FCMF competition, he's particularly pleased by how they've grown together as a "choir family."
"I am so proud that they always are so accepting of others - whether it be welcoming new members in the choir or sharing music with other schools and organizations - and always with humility and sincerity," says Quan.
