Toddlers in the StrongStart program at Tillicum Elementary were busy drawing and painting on umbrellas that they planned to showcase this Saturday as part of a lantern procession that celebrates the dark and wet weather of Vancouver winters along with the joy of Hastings Park's restored natural beauty.

StrongStart is an engaging early learning program that welcomes parents and their kids from birth to the age of five at no cost. Steven Pedersen, facilitator at Tillicum's StrongStart, says he wants parents and children to feel at home.

"StrongStart at Tillicum is fairly mixed in terms of culture. It's very diverse," explains Pedersen. "We embrace everybody. Sometimes we get newly immigrated families to join our program which gives them a great chance to connect with other parents."
