A team of students from Maple Grove Elementary school no longer has to use their imaginations when thinking about competing in the Global Finals of the Destination Imagination competition.
The group, who have named themselves 'The Twizzlers', placed 3rd in the province-wide Destination Imagination competition on April 13, 2013 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and secured a spot in the finals being held in Tennessee from May 21 to 25.
Now Grade 7 students Marley Giardino, Steven Jin, Kevin Kong, Felix Suen, Ethan Tao-Lem, Errol Xu and Nathan Ng, will travel on May 21 to 25 to compete against 30,000 students from around the world for the Destination Imagination Global Finals.
"I'm very proud of the students - they put a great deal of work and effort into this and really showed both creative and critical thinking through this project," said Stepahine Sellars, principal of Maple Grove Elementary. "Also congratulations to Mrs. Humeniuk who actually took three teams to the last round of the competition and did a wonderful job promoting creativity and critical thinking in the school."
The Twizzlers were tasked with creating a structure using only pre-approved materials like corrugated cardboard and newsprint, and then subjecting it to a variety of tests.
"They built a structure made from materials chosen from a list," said Sellars. "Their structure was then tested by placing weights on it and subjecting it to torque inducing impacts."
The students were then evaluated based on many different areas, including how well their structure survived the tests and their ability to work together as a team.
The students are now trying to raise money to help fund their trip to Tennessee for the Global competition. If you would like to donate, please email: email@example.com
