Coming back to school can be a magical experience and it certainly was this year for the Admiral Seymour School community. On the evening of Wednesday, September 26, close to 200 students, parents/caregivers, staff and community partners came together for a Welcome Back BBQ. It was a collaborative effort by Seymour's inner city team and lively evening for families and community partners, full of food and fun.

The event started in the school cafeteria where families were served up a meal by Seymour school staff. Outside in the school courtyard, community partners from Raycam Cooperative, Strathcona Community Centre, and Vancouver Coastal Health's school nurses provided information and activities for families. Red Fox provided active, healthy activities that kept children jumping and running around and the Strathcona Branch of the Vancouver Public Library came with books and piles of lego.

"Students couldn't help but smile as they jumped in a bouncy castle, ate corn on the cob, were hugged by Fin and watched a puppet show," says Lani Morden, Principal of Seymour Elementary. "I really want to thank our UBC volunteers, the Downtown East Side Produce Project and the Vancouver Canucks for supporting us."

While the sun went down at the end of the evening, a live entertainer kept the crowd on edge as he juggled on top of a ladder. As families said goodnight to each other and walked home, one Grade One student approached their principal and asked, "Can we do that again tomorrow?"
