Thanks to a generous grant from Artstarts, the Athena Arts students from Windermere Secondary School were able to embark upon a unique and innovative art outreach project. The Athena students have been hard at work this year on a 7-month, multi-faceted art project. They have been working with four amazing artists- Haida painter/graffiti writer Corey Bulpitt, Tsimshian artist Morgan Green, New Brunswick-born painter Brent Clowater, and multi-media artist Flick Harrison.
The students began by working on smaller art projects with each artist. Projects included creating First Nations-inspired coppers with personal imagery and cutting and spraypainting multi-coloured stencils paintings. With Brent, they worked on researching an art-making method of a culture that they found interesting - possibly one from their own cultural background.
Then, armed with their newfound artmaking skills and know-how, they traveled to Macdonald Elementary's Aboriginal Focus School to work with the younger students. During their visit, they spent two afternoons assisting the artists and mentoring the Macdonald students. In the end, the younger kids ended up with their own coppers, stencil paintings, and graffiti-style intitials to take home.
