Grade 1 students at Strathcona Elementary were treated to a day of reading and storytelling with the help of some special guests.
Children's author Caroline Adderson was onsite to read her latest book "Speak Norman!" to the students and surprised students with their very own copy of the book, courtesy of First Book Canada and HSBC.
Adderson began the morning by recognizing that at Strathcona there are over 15 languages spoken by the Grade 1 students. She encouraged everyone to say "Hello" in all the different languages. Her book,"Norman Speak!", is themed around languages and empathy towards people (and dogs) who maybe speak a different language than our own.
After the recess break, volunteers from HSBC read with small groups of children in their classrooms, giving them another two books to take home.
Says Margaret Jorgensen, Principal at Strathcona. "It was a beautiful morning at Strathcona, with adults sharing their love of reading with our students."
