School-wide Bhangra Lessons Have Laurier Students on Their Feet

In a recent assembly at Sir Wilfred Laurier Elementary, each grade took turns performing a Bhangra dance for their fellow students and the Laurier parent community. With deafening cheers from the audience, classes from Kindergarten to Grade 7 performed and celebrated their new-found love of dance.

"We had done Hip Hop for a number of years and we wanted to try something different," says Janet Souther, Principal at Laurier Elementary. "The staff suggested Bollywood or Bhangra and Jess Dance was recommended by some of my colleagues in the district."

Under the skilled leadership of dance teacher Jessica Dhillon from Jess Dance the students had only four rehearsals, from Monday to Thursday, in preparation for the Friday performance.

Parents and staff were suitably impressed, with one parent commenting, "The energy at the Bhangra dancing was fantastic. If there is Bhangra dancing next year the only thing to top that would be teachers and staff performing!"
