Nootka, Bruce and Cunningham Kids Head to Opera Camp

This Spring Break, eastside youth got to attend Opera Camp.

During the first week of Spring Break, 20 students from Bruce, Nootka and Cunningham Elementary Schools had an opportunity to experience a variety of art forms including painting, stagecraft, script writing, drama and even costume design. The end result was an inspiring performance and their own mini-opera called the Loon.

Community Schools Coordinator Marisol Petersen says this year's Opera Camp was the result of an exciting new partnership between the VSB's Community Schools Teams and Vancouver Opera.

StudentsThe final show was performed for VSB Chairperson Christopher Richardson, Bruce Principal Lani Morden (and her two children), Acting Supervisor of CommunityLINK and Alternative Programs Gerhard Maynard and a hushed audience of program staff and parents. Students opened with a special dance and then performed their self-made mini opera with gusto.

Petersen says special thanks need to go to Vancouver Opera's Colleen Maybin and Teaching Artists Rory Cowal, Katrin Poemmerl, and Russell Cripps.

"They made this a very memorable experience possible for our students," she says. "Also, thanks to Elder Mary Jane Joe and Visual Artist Karen Myskiw who provided wonderful insight and teachings to students."
