With a grant from the Vancouver Police Foundation, the VPD Police Athletics League (PAL) and School Liaison Unit recently purchased jerseys for students in 18 Vancouver elementary schools.
A few years ago, members of the VPD observed that children participating in elementary school athletic programs lacked adequate jerseys for their team-based activities. Through their discussions with local elementary school principals, VPD members learned that schools greatly needed new jerseys.
This year, a commitment for continued funding for the project will allow thousands of Vancouver students to play in branded school jerseys for the next 5-10 years.
With the new jerseys students are able to participate in a school sports with matching jerseys, which in turn creates a feeling of team and builds confidence and participation in sports. The reversible jerseys are in specific school colours with each school's name-allowing the students to wear it with pride while representing their school at various events throughout the year.
ABOUT THE VPD POLICE ATHLETICS LEAGUE
The VPD PAL is a youth crime prevention initiative that uses athletic, recreational and educational programs as a tool to foster positive rapport and mutual trust between police officers and youths. As part of PAL, VPD members interact annually with thousands of Vancouver youth through school athletic outreach programs such as soccer, basketball, and floor hockey. These programs provide an opportunity for students to meet police officers, while promoting fairness, integrity, and a respect for others.
