VSB students earned five gold, four silver, and two bronze medals at the SkillsBC Provincial competition on April 13, 2016.
SkillsBC, in association with SkillsCanada, offers a unique opportunity for young people across the province to participate in competitions in the skilled trades and applied technologies. These competitions expose young people to rewarding careers in trades/technology.
Qualifying competitions are held in 13 regions across BC (our region includes North Van, West Van and Howe Sound). The Regional gold medalists come together for the Provincial competition in Abbotsford. More than 40 contest areas are offered.
Young people who earn gold at Provincials advance to Nationals, which will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick in June 2016.
Nineteen VSB high school students competed and 11 earned medals (and one more from a 2014 grad!). One medal was earned by a youth from one of our Adult Centres (a first). We had nine busloads of VSB students attend as spectators, the largest contingent we've ever sent.
VSB students from UHill competed in the Junior Skills competition for the first time ever. We also had our first ever competitors in the IT Networking category from Killarney.
The success of our VSB students is thanks to teachers and support staff who volunteer countless hours to coach and mentor. Wendy Gilmour, VSB Apprenticeship teacher, is a key reason why as many VSB students as possible have the opportunity to compete.
