Vancouver - (September 26, 2016) - Vancouver School Board trustees voted tonight to proceed with public consultation to consider the closure of 11 schools. Online consultation will begin October 11, and meetings with affected school communities will be held from mid-October to early November. Details of the consultation process and schedules will be available at engage.vsb.bc.ca on September 27.
As recommended by the Planning and Facilities/Education Committee trustees voted to consult on the consideration of closure for 6 elementary schools, 4 annexes, and 1 secondary school. Those schools are:
- Champlain Heights Annex
- McBride Annex
- Queen Elizabeth Annex
- Tecumseh Annex
- Admiral Seymour Elementary
- Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary
- Graham D. Bruce Elementary
- Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary
- Queen Alexandra Elementary
- Sir Guy Carleton Elementary
- Gladstone Secondary
Trustees passed an amendment to consider the closure of Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary, only under the condition that students not be moved to Begbie Elementary, which has a higher seismic risk rating, until it is seismically upgraded.
As recommended by the committee, trustees also decided to remove Britannia Secondary from consideration of closure.
The preliminary list of schools was presented to the Board in June 2016, and detailed administrative reports, along with an overview report titled "Strategic Report: Potential School Closures," were submitted on September 15 as required by VSB policy and conforming to the School Act.
As outlined in VSB policy, two weeks notice will be provided to affected communities before communication and consultation begins. This will provide trustees with an opportunity to hear from each school community before making a decision on whether to proceed with any closures in December.
"We understand how difficult any conversations about closing schools can be, and we know a school is more than just a building to those who work and study there," said Mike Lombardi, Chair of the Vancouver School Board. "At this time, no decisions have been made. We need to hear from and talk with people throughout school communities who would be affected if any of these schools were to be closed. We'll be doing extensive online consultation, and holding both general town-halls and school-specific sessions to hear from communities. Trustees will only make decisions after we review all of this information."
Schdeules of consultations and online feedback will be posted at engage.vsb.bc.ca. Information is also available at engage.vsb.bc.ca about VSB's long range facilities planning.
