Project Chef kicked off its 2016-17 sessions with a visit to Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary. This Vancouver program that teaches students the knowledge and skills needed to make wholesome, nutritious meals for themselves, has taught nearly 12,000 students in its first nine years, and is aiming to reach another 2,000 this year.
Students at Grenfell learned to make porridge and apple sauce under the supervision of Barb Finley and her team of chefs.
"Project Chef embraces the new curriculum because we teach life skills, nutrition, food literacy and subject-specific academics in a very integrated way," said Finley. "It's hands on and experiential. It gets food education in their bones."
Grenfell principal Rosemary Love said the school community embraces Project Chef when it comes to the school.
"The parents love it. They think it's fantastic when the students come home and talk about Project Chef," she said.
