Students feeling good about jazz

About 400 VSB students took their music education and performances to the next level at the 2016 Vancouver District Secondary Jazz Festival.

One of three expert adjudicators listened as each of the 13 school jazz bands performed two or three numbers at Point Grey Secondary. Each band then received a 30-minute clinic with their adjudicator.

The adjudicators were Juno-nominated bassist Jodi Proznick of the Jodi Proznick Quartet, Dr. Jared Burrows, Jazz Studies department coordinator at Capilano University and leader of the Vancouver Improvisers Orchestra, and jazz composer Fred Stride, who leads the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra and teaches jazz theory and arranging at the University of British Columbia School of Music.

"The festival is very valuable in terms of the students' musical growth, learning and development," said District Fine Arts Coordinator Peggy Bochun. "It's an opportunity for schools around the district to hear each other.

"It helps the students set the bar and see what they can achieve."
