Sunrise is a grade 8, 9 school-based Alternative Program that promotes critical and creative thinking, artistic expression, and a commitment to diversity and social justice. Along with core academic subjects, Sunrise has a strong focus on health and wellness and on developing a safe and welcoming classroom community. Sunrise engages students in learning through theme-based, cross-curricular instruction.
Program staff work to build strong and trusting relationships with students and to provide a safe, supportive, and creative educational environment. Our intention is to reengage each student in their own educational future, build confidence and self-esteem, and give them a sense of belonging and community.
Student progress is managed through the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process, which involves the student, the parent/guardian, and program staff. Adaptations are made where necessary to meet the needs of the students. Staff meet monthly with students to discuss progress in their course work and education goals.
