GF Strong - School Program

Program Objectives

  • meet the academic needs of students with neurological impairments sustained through injury or illness (including assessment, remediation and academic programming) 
  • work collaboratively with a students' home school staff and therapy team for the purpose of integrating the benefits of school and rehabilitation therapy
  • reintegrate students with newly acquired disabilities back to their home school communities
  • educate school staff (administrators, teachers and school support staff), parents and peers about traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other neurological impairments
  • create awareness about the outcomes of traumatic brain injury and its impact on learning through workshop presentations and publications

The GF Strong School Program staff work as part of an interdisciplinary team meeting the needs of students with cognitive and physical impairments resulting from injury and illness. There are four components to the program: Academic Assessment; Academic Remediation; Academic Programming with BC Ministry of Education curriculum; and School Reintegration/Return Planning/Facilitation.

Referral Process

  • all inpatients admitted to GF Strong, who meet the mandate, have access to the GF Strong School Program
  • outpatients admitted to the Adolescent and Young Adult Program are referred to the GF Strong School Program and screened for appropriateness 
  • consultation is provided to schools and families upon request

Adolescents admitted to the Adolescent Complex Consussion Clinic (ACCC) will receive: 

  • education for the student, family and school regarding the effects of concussion and its impact on learning
  • appropriate inter-rention and academic accommodations for the purpose of developing a return to learn plan.

Students are formally discharged from the Adolescent and Young Adult Inpatient and Outpatient Program, G. F. Strong School Program staff can be available to consult on an as needed basis.
