14-year-old Tiffany Kong has no time to be anxious about going back to school. Instead, she’s preparing to play in a prestigious women’s golf tournament this weekend. Kong, who will enter Grade 9 at David Thompson Secondary in September, has qualified to play in the CP Women’s Open at Vancouver Golf Club. Read story in The Vancouver Sun.

On a sunny Wednesday this April, 170 intermediate students from Osler Elementary headed out onto the school field for a special track and field program. That morning they were led by Osler Principal Shannon Burton in a range of warm activities before they headed to six different stations including sprints, relay, high jump, long jump, strength training and shot put.

Fifteen students from Britannia Secondary’s Street2Peak team climbed Mount Kilimanjaro this Spring Break after training for over a year by hiking the mountains of the Northshore and running marathons in Vancouver and Seattle. Funds for the project came from 11 months of fundraising, donations, and gear and equipment sponsorships.

Britannia Secondary's Table Tennis teams had a very successful season after a four year hiatus. The Boys' team competed in doubles and team events at the Provincial Tournament.

Early this year it was volleyball season at Selkirk. This year numerous intermediate students are playing on the school’s Grade 6 and Grade 7 teams.

This winter the Killarney Community Centre ice rink has been filled frequently with a mass of ELL and international students from Killarney Secondary. Equipped with helmets, hockey sticks and plastic pucks, the students have gradually improved their on-ice skills.

The Vancouver Elementary Physical Activity Association (VEPAA) recently held their annual Coaches’ Recognition Reception at VanDusen Gardens. 

The yearly event is an opportunity for elementary school teachers and administrators, who all volunteer at their schools to coach teams and lead athletics programs, to come together and celebrate each other’s achievements and hard work.

Megan Smith loves basketball. She also happens to be a wheel-chair athlete. So when the soft-spoken Douglas Elementary Grade 7 student asked her coach Sean Smith if she could join the school’s basketball team, he said why not?

University Hill Secondary Grade 8 student Max Gedajlovic has been playing in chess tournaments since he was in Grade 4. Back then he was enrolled in one of the district’s MAAC classes. He had a friend who invited him to play and after the first game he was hooked. His friend told him he was so good he should join a chess club.
