For over 15 years, Mr. Darryl Koe, a Grade 1/2 teacher at Tillicum Annex, has been organizing the school’s daylong Sports Day. Koe is quick to acknowledge his colleagues who pitch in to support him. But the day, which has changed little in the last 20 years, is clearly his passion project.

The 31st Annual Paul Sanghera Indoor Soccer Tournament, sponsored by the Vancouver Police Department, was hosted by Windermere on April 8 and 9. The tournament opened with a beautiful rendition of Oh Canada sung by Windermere student Angelika Escabarte.

UHill Elementary staff and students kicked off Spring Break with a basketball game. During the game U-Hill Elementary staff took on the school's senior girls and boys teams. It was a heart-stopping close game with hardly a break in the action.

The Sir Charles Tupper Tigers AAA Boy’s Basketball team is the current Vancouver city champions and under the skilled coaching of Jeff Gourley they are headed to the Provincial Championships in Langley this week.

Tim Palanca loves basketball and he loves volleyball. He’s part of a large team of committed boys in Grade 6 and 7 who attend Grenfell Elementary. Last semester Palanca and his friends on the volleyball team captured first place in the city championship.

This past month the students at Florence Nightingale Elementary spent many hours raising pledges for the Heart and Stroke Foundation via the Jump Rope for Heart Campaign. Coinciding with Valentine’s Day the jump-a-thon not only promoted heart health in the physical sense, but in the emotional sense as well.

On January 16, Selkirk Elementary intermediate students were wildly excited about a visit from BC Lions football stars. The Lions visited Selkirk to teach the students about energy conservation.

For the 12th consecutive year, Streetfront students and staff drove down to Seattle and ran the Seattle Marathon. Streetfront teacher Trevor Stokes says things have changed over the past decade.

Early in November, John Oliver (JO) Secondary School Community Schools Team hosted an amazing wrestling event. The day gave Metro Vancouver's young wrestlers a unique opportunity to learn tips and tricks from university wrestling athletes and world class clinicians, such as three time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek, World Universaide champion and Team BC Coach Lindsey Belisle, and former world champion Chris Wilson.

Over 100 students and staff representing eight Alternative Programs from around the district gathered at Trout Lake Park on a sunny day in October this year to play in the Annual Softball Tournament.

Students from Take a Hike Program at John Oliver Secondary recently returned from two fall backcountry trips. The Grade 11/12 class went for a ten day backpacking trip to Tenquille Lake just north of the Pemberton Valley where they got to see spectacular views of the Coastal Mountains from the top of Mount McCleod and Finch Ridge.

Over 250 Grade 10 Byng Secondary students got a chance to meet some superstar snowboarders and learn more about how climate change is impacting the sport they love in a special assembly that took place at the school in early October.

Thousands of students from across the Vancouver School District flocked to Trout Lake Park on Thursday, October 17 for the annual VEPAA District Cross Country Meet. Throughout the afternoon the sun shined brightly as hundreds of runners made their way around the park during the meet.

A creek once ran from Kingsway to Great Northern Way. It has long since been covered over with asphalt. But that didn’t stop a group of ten Mount Pleasant Elementary students from Grades 5 to 7 from exploring the creek in their lessons about watersheds.

Britannia Secondary’s Keenan Williams has been playing baseball since he was 6 years old. Now, after well over a decade of pitching and playing outfield, Williams is set to take his baseball game to the next level with an invitation to practice with the Canadian Junior National Team.
