Oppenheimer Elementary was visited by Coach Alain Vigneault and several assistant coaches. The Canucks coaches gave the kids some tips on their floor hockey skills and then headed to the classroom to answer questions.

David Oppenheimer Elementary students and staff were treated to a presentation by Liz Gleadle, London 2012 Olympic Games Women’s Javelin Finalist (finishing in 12th place) and Canadian Women’s Record Holder. An alumnus of Kitsilano Secondary, she was in her hometown to share her story of competing in the games, her journey to the Olympics, and why it’s ok to try many different activities and be who you are.

On Monday October 29, TELUS Vancouver Community Board Member and Olympian, Diane Clement presented the staff and students of the Britannia Hockey Academy (BHA) with an $18,000 donation during a ceremonial puck drop.

On Friday, September 28, 12 students from Templeton's Culinary Arts Center served “A Breakfast of Champions” at an event called, “Jersey Day” celebrating Canada Sports Day. Canada Sports Day was created through a partnership with Vancouver National Sport and the Vancouver Park Board.

This year the VSB's District Cross Country Meet had a record turnout of 3,005 elementary school runners. Organizers say this far surpasses the usual high participation rates of previous years. The event took place at Trout Lake. Students could be seen throughout the afternoon of Thursday October 25 jogging around the park's lake at high speeds.

Over the last month, Laura Secord's PAC and school community has been very busy. Following the celebratory opening of the school's brand new field and playground, the school has also been busy "walking up a storm" during the international Beat the Street competition.

Last year a group of aboriginal students from the Vancouver School Board got a chance to try snowboarding for the first time. The initiative organized by VSB Aboriginal outreach workers in collaboration with the Squamish First Nation had a powerful impact on the lives of many of the young boarders.

Britannia students had a busy summer this year. Off the field, William Zhou, a Grade 12 student with a deep and unabiding love of particle physics headed off to Deep River Science Academy. Zhou joined other brilliant young scientists-in-training to study the Chalk River nuclear reactor.

This year the Edith Cavell Elementary school community raised over $12,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. In return for their fundraising efforts and prior to the annual run, students were given a very special treat. Great seats and the opportunity to buzz cut their favorite teacher's hair with an electric razor.

Juma Nathani has had a busy secondary school life. The Grade 12 student is a rising star on the school's wrestling team and is angling for a wrestling scholarship after he headed to Japan this summer to compete with SFU teammates against Japan in an international competition.

At the start of the school year, over 100 students from Hastings and U-Hill Elementary got a special treat. An opportunity to practice with the Whitecaps and soccer stars Russell Teibert and Jay DeMerit.

This February was a busy time for many Vancouver schools. At Fleming Elementary, February 16 was marked by the annual Jump Rope for Heart. The event was fun times for the hundreds of students involved.

Community engagement is the name of the game on the gym floor at Churchill. Over the past seven years the school’s seen a growing number of alumni coming back to help their former teachers coach a number of athletic teams. Currently the Churchill athletics program is benefitting from around ten alumni students coming back to coach.

It was a big day for elementary students across the district and now the results are in. This year 68 schools participated in the 2011 District Elementary Cross Country Championships.

The winds of Kona Island was blowing so hard, it was knocking riders right off their bikes. Kitsilano Secondary teacher Ann Hayes kept her head down and continued to pump hard. She was in the second leg of the Kona Iron Man, the ultimate Ironman challenge that brings together 1800 of the top triathlon athletes from around the world.
