Vancouver Firefighter Charities (VFC) launched a major expansion to its Snacks for Kids program this month. By increasing service and supply, the program now supports an additional 420 vulnerable Vancouver students.

Since 2004, Holiday Hampers have been happening in the Tupper Community. This year the Tupper family of schools, other local schools, and community partners provided 100 holiday hampers to families in need in the community.

Over the month of December, Marilyn Reibin’s Grade 1 class at Selkirk Elementary undertook a unique art project in support of the Food Bank of Greater Vancouver.

The City of Vancouver has notified Vancouver School Board that a water main on the grounds of King George Secondary on Barclay Street had to be shut off due to an apparent leak.

Since it is unlikely to be repaired before the start of school Monday, the District has decided to close King George Secondary for the day while the water problem is worked on.

The Vancouver School District takes the safety of students and staff extremely seriously. As noted by provincial authorities and the City of Vancouver, the December 29 earthquake, which was reported to be between 4.3 and 4.8 magnitude, caused no damage to buildings or infrastructure. 

Schools will open as scheduled on Monday, January 4, with no evidence of any change in the safety level of the buildings.

The 20th Annual Inner City Community Christmas Dinner was held at Hastings School earlier this month.

Guests were served a delicious hot turkey Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, prepared and catered by Templeton Secondary School Culinary Arts students, led by teacher Patti Koyanagi.

Five of Selkirk Elementary’s eight Gr. 6 and 7 volleyball teams participated in an early December series of games against members of the Vancouver Police Department.

As a part of this year’s program the senior math class at John Oliver Secondary partnered with VanCity to learn about wages, mortgages and taxes—a focus on relevance, and also partnered with a Grade 3 class at Mackenzie Elementary to teach math games—a focus on fun.

When Hana Woldeyes arrived in Vancouver from Ethiopia just over 2 years ago, she was shy and unsure about what she could expect when starting school. Today she is regarded as a leader in the community and has been short-listed for the Samara Canada Everyday Political Citizen Project (EPCP).

With a grant from the Vancouver Police Foundation, the VPD Police Athletics League (PAL) and School Liaison Unit recently purchased jerseys for students in 18 Vancouver elementary schools.

Since 1991, The Vancouver School District has been running a campaign in support of The United Way and annually raises approximately $40,000 through events and VSB employees making pledges through payroll. To date district staff and schools have raised over $1.5 million for the community. 

This year’s campaign will run from November 18th – December 31st, and kicked off with the annual Pancake Breakfast (November 18th) held in the cafeteria at the Board Office.

Students from Shaughnessy Elementary School created a unique art installation to be presented to the city, which honours fallen soldiers.

The project, which up-cycles old pop bottles into red poppies, was an opportunity for Shaughnessy teacher Carla Pace to engage her Grade 5 students not only creatively, but also give them a deeper connection to the history of Remembrance Day.

Vancouver Canucks forwards Daniel Sedin (#22) and Radim Vrbata (#17), and mascot Fin, stopped by Lord Selkirk Elementary School this week.

Students and staff were thrilled to meet the players and show Sedin and Vrbata how they have incorporated hockey into their learning of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

CBC News recently visited Grandview Elementary to learn more about a unique program that brings community together and supports East Vancouver parents.

"Tuesday Tea at the inner-city Grandview Elementary School, which has a largely vulnerable population, brings parents together to offer a supportive environment."
