The school year started with a big transit and fitness adventure for 76 Grade 7 students from U-Hill Elementary. Using transit, the entire class managed to navigate their way from UBC to the Northshore’s Grouse Grind using bus, skytrain and sea bus.

On Friday, September 20, all the students at Emily Carr Elementary ran, jogged, and walked in honour of Terry Fox and cancer research. The students warmed up to the loud tunes of the classic Village People song 'YMCA'. Parents of all the students cheered on the young runners as they circled Douglas Park.

This summer, Donna Lu, an Eric Hamber grad of 2012, flew around the world to Leipzig, Germany to represent Canada in the summer at the 42nd Worldskills Competitions

This year two Vancouver School District students were awarded fifth annual Trevor Linden Community Spirit Scholarships. This year's scholarship winners were David Thompson Secondary's Parys Liu and Britannia Secondary's Nathalie Mila.

Kaylie Choi, a 14 year old SPARTS student at Magee Secondary was named Junior Athlete of the Year at the Rhythmic Gymnastics National Championships held in Ottawa May 17-21, 2013. She was also the recipient of the Evelyn Koop trophy for all around Junior Elite champion.

On May 3, Windermere Secondary hosted Dance City 2013, a large hip hop dance competition featuring the moves of close to 400 students.

On Monday, May 13 close to 100 high school students from across the city teamed up with VPD school liaison officers in a tug-of-war contest, called Pulling for Inner City Kids, on the north lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The tug-of-war is an annual event hosted by CLICK (Contributing to Lives of Inner City Kids) and the VPD.

Every Wednesday after school Filipino youth from four VSB secondary schools converge at South Hill’s gym to compete in a basketball tournament. This program is planned and led entirely by immigrant/refugee youth (both boys and girls) from John Oliver through the Engaged Immigrant Youth Program.

Grandview Elementary took home the top prize in this year's city championship for senior girls basketball. Coach Cassidy Kannemeyer says the win was a long time coming and the result of years of hard work.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 at Edith Cavell Elementary have been working with the Boogaloo Academy of Dance for the last few years developing and refining their Hip Hop dance skills. This year, as in other years, they presented a school-wide dance show for their peers and parents.

David Thompson Secondary has a lot of things going for it. One of those things is an all-star curling team. On February 27, the school sent their curling team to Kamloops where they representated the lower mainland at the high school provincial curling championships.

This winter six John Oliver Secondary Take a Hike Alternative Program students became mentors for a day with a around 16 Grade 2 and 3 students from Seymour Elementary. Last month, the students headed up to the snowy wonderland that is Cypress Mountain for a day of snowshoeing.

On January 15, Churchill Secondary students got a visit from a handful of BC Lions players. As part of the "Be More Than A Bystander" program, the Lions players emphasized the role everyone can play in promoting healthy relationships and creating more respectful, peaceful schools and communities.

Pink Day is coming up and this year students from across the district will be dancing up a storm. The Pink Day dance is currently being led by David Lloyd George and Churchill. On Tuesdau, January 15, students from both schools along with other district students headed down to Churchill's lunchroom to practice (en masse) for the big "dancing" day.
