On Tuesday, October 21, John Oliver’s Learning Commons was flooded by the paparazzi and dignitaries who were there to welcome the Dalai Lama as he visited the school as part of his “Be the Village” Heart-Mind Youth Dialogues series.

All Vancouver schools will be ready to welcome students to a new school year on Monday, September 22.  

School next week will then begin as it would in early September, with a shortened first day on Monday and regular hours of instruction on the next day (Tuesday, September 23).

As you are most likely aware, a tentative agreement between the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the provincial government through the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) on behalf of school boards has been reached. The next step will be for members of the BCTF and all school boards in the province to vote to ratify this agreement. We anticipate that this will be completed by the end of the day on Friday.

We understand that providing supervision during the day for children can be a challenge for many families. With this in mind, the district has created an additional list (to complement our earlier list) of organizations around Vancouver which are providing child-care and educational options for students during job action.

The VSB rents many of our facilities to outside organizations during the school year. During job action it is unknown whether schools will be picketed preventing building engineers and head custodians from providing access to community rentals.

AnxietyBC teamed-up with child expert Dr. Lynn Miller from UBC to create "Easy Separation", a short animated video on how to reduce anxiety for Kindergartners during the first days of school.

University Hill Elementary Grade 1 students jumped at the opportunity to work as a team to create ‘Theatre In The Woods’ for their parents and fellow Kindergarten class. Students worked autonomously choosing their own roles, making their own costumes and practicing for the performance of six plays based on books by Eric Carle.

The safety and security of all our students is our highest priority. Should any students arrive at school while picket lines are in place, our school administrators will ensure that they are cared for until they can be safely returned to their homes under the supervision of a parent or guardian.
